The traffic light government has laboriously negotiated a compromise in the budget crisis, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Robert Habeck, Christian Lindner and the others will probably not have a quiet time between the holidays. The cuts are too controversial and the discussions are too loud. The clamor for the abolition of benefits once introduced is always loud; no one wants to bear the burden. “In the end, someone always has to pay,” says RWE boss Markus Krebber – and he’s right. Either the federal government (and thus the taxpayer) or the electricity and gas customers pay for the restructuring of the energy industry through higher prices. If support for agriculture (agricultural diesel) ceases as planned, this will reduce the burden on the federal budget, but customers will probably have to pay more for food.
