Dunkirk chosen to save the world

Dunkirk, the place to breathe. The “DKarbonation” industrial center in Dunkirk, in the North, has joined a global initiative supported by the World economic forum around the transition to zero net CO2 emissions from industrial clusters we learned 20 minutes, this Thursday. “Dunkirk chose a new decarbonized industrial model in 2014. This commitment to innovation today makes our territory the leading French hub for decarbonization,” says Patrice Vergriete, the former mayor who became Minister of Accommodation.

“net zero emissions” in 2050

Supported by the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Accenture and EPRI, this transition initiative towards the decarbonization of industry brings together 20 industrial territories on four continents. For France, Dunkirk is the only one at the moment. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, the goal of this grouping of private industrialists and public actors is “to create jobs and develop new technologies by sharing best practices in terms of policy, financing, innovations and of partnerships”.

For Dunkirk, its industrial hub called “DKarbonation” covers the seaport, but also the areas of steel, aluminum, materials and manufacturing, cement, gas, low-carbon hydrogen production, and battery gigafactory. All this generates 16 million tonnes of CO2 each year, the aim being to reduce the emissions bill by 55% by 2030 and to achieve “net zero emissions” in 2050.

Participation in this World Economic Forum initiative should help the territory achieve its objective thanks to the synergies developed between its members. And this is no small feat, knowing that Dunkirk and Fos-sur-Mer account for almost half of the CO2 emitted by industry in France.
