Drunk driver jailed for fatally mowing down man on scooter

He was traveling to work on a scooter when he was fatally mowed down and left in a ditch. A 46-year-old man died tragically on Friday around 5 a.m. in the town of Carnac (Morbihan). Shortly after the accident, the vehicle in question, which had fled, was intercepted by the gendarmes with two young people in their twenties on board.

In police custody, the driver, who was drunk and uninsured, “admitted to having had a violent collision, having triggered the airbags of his car and in particular cracked the windshield”, underlines Stéphane Kellenberger, public prosecutor of Lorient . “Claiming to have thought about hitting an animal”, he then continued on his way “without checking the condition of his vehicle” despite the violence of the impact. “Absorbed by his phone”, the passenger apparently saw nothing of the accident.

At the end of his police custody, the young driver was indicted for “involuntary manslaughter by a driver in an alcoholic state, followed by flight. » Placed in pre-trial detention, he will be tried on February 26. His passenger was released.
