How Lake Constance should quench Bavaria’s thirst

Drinking water in abundance, that was once. In the meantime, the levels are falling, especially in northern Bavaria. The photo shows the Reisach moated castle in the Mangfall Valley. From here the water flows to Munich.

Because it is getting drier in the north, the Free State is planning a network of new lines and dams to ensure long-term supply. The costs for this could be up to five billion euros.

Much was not missing and the drinking water supply would have become a major contentious issue in the state election campaign. One that would have made it uncomfortable for the CSU and Free Voters. With a joint application, their parliamentary groups wanted to overturn the priority of the public drinking water supply over all other uses in the course of the update of the state development plan (LEP). Corporate withdrawals for profit should be treated on an equal footing, even in the face of water shortages. That would be pretty much the opposite of what all the experts are asking for.
