Double breakdown in the final overshadows the DBB team’s victory

The German basketball players made history against Serbia in the World Cup final. With an 83:77 victory in the final in Manila, national coach Gordon Herbert’s team secured their first ever title. Of course, there was great joy afterwards.

Basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “World champion!!! Unbelievable! What a team!!!!” The players were also very enthusiastic; among other things, they crashed live interviews on MagentaSport’s TV broadcasts.

However, there were two mishaps during the evening that caused some amusement. Shortly after the DBB team’s victory, the Fédération Internationale de Basketball (Fiba) published a photo collage to pay tribute to the German team. The picture showed the World Cup trophy and the team’s twelve players. The words “World Champions” were emblazoned underneath.

However, if you look closely, you can see that the basketball association made a mistake. You can’t see the twelve different players from the German squad, but rather Andreas Obst twice. In the middle row he is shown once on the left and again second from the right. Shooting guard David Krämer is completely missing. A user noticed this faux pas. However, the world association did not change the photo.

According to “Bild”, this is not the first time that Krämer has fallen victim to Fiba. Until the semi-finals, the lockers in the team’s dressing rooms were always labeled with the names of the respective players, namely “Kramer” instead of “Krämer”. The background is quite simple: the umlaut “ä” does not exist in English.

It was only before the game against the USA (113:111) that Krämer got his lines over the “a” and thus had the real name on his locker for the first time.

But Krämer’s mistake shouldn’t be the only one. The German Basketball Federation (DBB) also had a mishap after winning the final. In their own newsletter, which was sent out after the triumph, there is the wording: “The DBB men are currently celebrating this outstanding success extensively after losing the final against Serbia.”

However, the correction followed around 30 minutes later. In another email, the DBB apologized and wrote: “In our overzealousness, we unfortunately made a mistake in the opening credits. Of course it has to say ‘after winning the final’. We apologize for this.”
