Out in the Champions League, out in the cup. After the disastrous game in Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund only has to hunt for the championship – but for coach Terzic something else has priority.

At the end of this cruel evening for Borussia Dortmund, Edin Terzic used a wonderful metaphor. “There is no tomorrow for us in this competition,” said the coach, summing up the end of the DFB Cup. He had previously described the 0: 2 at defending champion RB Leipzig as a “shitty evening in principle” and was just as correct. BVB’s performance was somewhere between frightening and out of the question. The guests got a shot on goal, mind you in stoppage time.

“There was a good chance of lifting the trophy”

If they hadn’t lost their composure at BVB after the defeat in Munich and the associated loss of the Bundesliga table lead, Terzic seemed almost shocked in the Leipzig stadium. “When you don’t pass the ball to one another, you simply distribute bombs and leave your teammates alone. We simply have to learn from this that you don’t need four ball contacts to make a decision,” analyzed the coach.

Like Leipzig, Dortmund went into the quarter-finals knowing that Bayern Munich was no longer an option. RB coach Marco Rose openly admitted that he had discussed this with his team before the game. “There was a good chance of lifting the trophy,” said Terzic. Now Leipzig, Frankfurt, Freiburg and Stuttgart are playing the trophy amongst themselves.

After losing the Champions League and the cup, BVB still has the championship. The gap to leaders Munich is only two points. But in view of the performance, Terzic did not want to address it. “It would be presumptuous to talk about it. First of all, we have to straighten it out in terms of performance,” said the 40-year-old. For him personally it was the first defeat in the competition. In 2021 he had won the cup in Berlin with BVB, the opponent at the time was Leipzig – and had no chance.

Dortmund wants to learn from their mistakes

Of course, Terzic hadn’t lost his optimism, it’s part of the job. “We’ve already shown this season that we’re ready to learn from our mistakes. If we can build on the things that have made us strong, then we’ll have the opportunity to celebrate a title,” said Terzic. On Saturday, second-placed BVB welcomes third-placed 1. FC Union Berlin for the top duel of the day.

For Leipzig, it’s off to Hertha in the capital. And the team will start the short journey with significantly higher self-confidence. “It’s just good that we’ve rewarded ourselves again, we’ve talked a lot and it’s just good when it bears fruit,” said captain Orban. “Now we’ll continue on Saturday with this energy, we still have a bit of catching up to do.”

Due to defeats in Bochum and against Mainz, Leipzig slipped down to fifth place in the league. They are two points behind the fourth from Freiburg. The cup is all well and good as a source of inspiration, but at RB they primarily look at the league. Qualifying for the Champions League is not only a financial obligation, but also for recruiting new top performers. Finally, in the summer – despite the fact that the official announcement is still pending – the extremely important Christopher Nkunku and Konrad Laimer will leave the club.
