In Braunschweig, the explosive ordnance disposal service defused two unexploded bombs from the Second World War on Sunday. The closures in the area around the site have been lifted.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the experts had neutralized both bombs. The defusing had previously been delayed: As the city announced in the afternoon, people entered the closed area several times. As a result, the demolition master and his team had to repeatedly interrupt their work on the explosive devices. “Follow the instructions of the law enforcement officers,” the city appealed in its live ticker. The evacuation of the area around the site in the morning had already been significantly delayed: around 5,000 residents were supposed to have left the closed area by 9 a.m., but the evacuation area was only cleared shortly before 1 p.m.

Hundreds of forces deployed in Braunschweig

In total, more than 450 emergency services from the fire department, police, emergency services and other organizations and institutions were involved. According to the city, the unexploded bombs were 250 kilogram American bombs from the Second World War with impact detonators. The sites were south of the Bürgerpark.

Train traffic restricted due to bomb disposal

Trains were partly replaced by buses.

Some light rail and bus lines were only able to operate to a limited extent. The bomb clearance also caused problems with train traffic, as the main train station is located directly in the restricted area. Several train connections have been replaced by buses. According to the railway, long-distance trains were rerouted, which eliminated stops in Hildesheim, Peine, Braunschweig and Helmstedt. According to Deutsche Bahn, regional train traffic via the east side of the main station was not affected. Travelers were encouraged to find out about their connection on the Internet and to pay attention to notices and announcements.
