Since 2016, consumers have been able to use their mobile phones and surf the Internet when visiting other EU countries at no extra charge at their domestic tariffs. This now also applies for ten more years.

Due to the provisional agreement between member states and the EU Parliament, the existing roaming rules will be extended until 2032. EU citizens can therefore continue to make phone calls, send text messages or surf the Internet at no extra charge when they are in other countries of the European Union.

The Slovenian EU Council Presidency was very satisfied and stated that consumers and businesses alike would benefit from the decision.

“European Success Story”

The responsible CSU MEP Angelika Niebler called the abolition of roaming charges a “European success story”. This will be continued through the extension of the applicable rules – according to Niebler a tangible example of how the EU is improving the everyday life of citizens.

For four and a half years, Europeans have only paid domestic prices for calls, SMS and data use in other EU countries. Without the agreement that has now been reached, the roaming rules would have expired in the middle of next year.
