The district of Munich, with its two constituencies for the election to the Bavarian state parliament, is historically a good place for the FDP. Here the liberals always do better than the Bavarian average; That was also the case in 2013, when the party slipped well below the five percent mark in the state election with severe losses and was thrown out of the Maximilianeum – in the constituency Munich-Land Süd the then incumbent member of the state parliament, Tobias Thalhammer, even got 7.1 percent of the vote First votes and still had to pack his bags.
The Liberals are currently in little better shape on the Sunday question than when they did historically poorly at the time. In the district, there is now also the fact that the personnel reorganization – Thalhammer has long been history and is now with the CSU – is much more noisy than the party leadership around district chairman Michael Ritz had actually wished for.

Because the field for the district FDP actually seemed to be in the interests of the district chairman: First, in the southern constituency, the lawyer Marco Deutsch, 60, threw his hat in the ring for the successor to Deputy Helmut Markwort, to whom the district executive was all too clear had made that he could not expect any support for a renewed direct candidacy. Like Ritz, Deutsch, a former racing driver, lives in Grünwald and is a member of the local FDP board.

In the northern constituency, the engineer Katharina Diem expressed her interest in running directly for the state elections. The mother of two, who heads the local branch, forms the FDP group in the district council together with Ritz and Manfred Riederle from Unterschleißheim.

But both applicants have grown up internal competitors that Ritz should not have counted on either – especially not with the opponent who has been challenging Deutsch since last weekend. Katharina Diem also has to face an internal party applicant. With the support of her own local association, the 64-year-old Unterföhring municipal councilor Veit Wiswesser, a former pilot and current entrepreneur, wants to contest her direct candidacy. The Kirchheim entrepreneur Thomas Jännert, who had unsuccessfully stood as a direct candidate in the 2018 state election in the Munich-North constituency, has finally left the race.
