District election in the Saale-Orla district: what the AfD defeat means – opinion

At the start of the 2024 election year, democratic civil society inflicted a narrow and important defeat on the AfD in Thuringia. In the Saale-Orla district, she elected the CDU man Christian Hergott as the new district administrator with a lead of 2,170 votes, not the AfD hardliner Uwe Thrum. A man who doesn’t even make an effort To hide contacts in the Reich citizen milieu and, in his own words, is not behind, but in front of, AfD state leader Björn Höcke. Thrum’s defeat is therefore also one for Höcke, who personally campaigned for him and would have liked to run as a direct candidate in the state elections in the district in September if Thrum had now conquered the district office. The reaction is correspondingly loud, with the AfD almost routinely interpreting the defeat as the result of a conspiracy by the media, parties, churches and unions.
