Taxis from the region will meet in Toulouse this Wednesday, January 24. They are going to demonstrate against a reform of medical transport. Follow the mobilization in this live.

Be careful, the weekend could be very complicated on the ring road and the highways around Toulouse. More than 300 taxis, from all over the region, are expected this Wednesday, January 24. They will organize snail operations on the ring road, starting in the morning, and this should last most of the day (see infographic).

The strike movement is renewable, and union officials announce that it could continue on Thursday or even Friday.
Anger has been growing since the end of 2023 among taxis. A first warning shot was given on December 11, with snail-like operations causing several dozen kilometers of slowdowns throughout the city. This Wednesday, January 24, it could be worse.

Health transport reform project

Taxis are up in arms against a plan to reform the transport of patients to healthcare establishments. This activity constitutes a major source of income for many taxi artisans.
The Ministry of Health, in its 2024 Social Security financing bill, wishes to make one hundred million euros in savings per year, on a transport budget of 5.5 billion.

Multiple patients per vehicle

To do this, he wants to set up a reservation system through platforms, to rationalize taxi travel, and “force” them to transport several patients at the same time in their vehicle, under penalty of being less reimbursed.
But for taxis, this obligation will not work.

Organizational problems and patients dissatisfied with the reform

“We are not against taking several people. We do this whenever possible, explains Stéphane Abeilhou, spokesperson for the National Union of Taxis of Occitanie (UNT). But the fear of dehumanization of medical transport is the basis of our mobilization. We are fighting for our patients, for people who would be forced to wait several hours in hospital halls, to get up at dawn because we will be forced to pick up other people,” adds the representative.

Taxis want to keep up the pressure

A petition of support to taxi carriers was launched.
By demonstrating this Wednesday, taxis hope to maintain pressure on health insurance funds, which have given taxis until February 1 to sign amendments to their agreement with Social Security. The president of the CPAM of Haute-Garonne will receive taxi representatives at 11 a.m. this Wednesday in Toulouse.
