Diesel prices have fallen, petrol is becoming more expensive

During the high-price phase during the energy crisis, diesel was at times significantly more expensive than petrol. The relationship has since reversed itself.

Prices at gas stations continue their downward trend. The price of diesel has fallen particularly significantly, as the current analysis by the ADAC shows. And that for the fifth time in a row: After another weekly decline, diesel was 1.58 euros on Tuesday (May 16) on a nationwide daily average, according to the ADAC. That is 0.8 cents less than in the previous week. Since April 11, the price has fallen by 12.1 cents.

E10 premium petrol, on the other hand, rose by 1.2 cents to €1.784 on a weekly basis. Compared to five weeks ago, the price has fallen by 3.8 cents.

This widens the gap between diesel and petrol. The difference is now 20.4 cents, which is above the long-term average. Diesel was still more expensive than petrol at the beginning of February.

That’s why diesel is now significantly cheaper than petrol

Last year, as a result of the Ukraine war, the demand for diesel increased, as did the higher demand for heating oil. Both caused diesel prices to rise.

Despite high prices: consumption increased

The annual figures for fuel deliveries reported by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) show an increase for petrol compared to the pandemic years 2020 and 2021. The level for diesel is largely unchanged. Read here why.
