Angela Merkel will receive one of the highest orders of merit this Monday. While her integrity is not in question, her political record is at least patchy. She should be more self-critical, especially when looking at Russia policy.

Towards the end of her term in office, many Germans could hardly imagine a country without Angela Merkel: who else could contain crises and the general madness like she did? Almost a year and a half later, however, Merkel’s legacy seems to have shrunk considerably. The longtime chancellor is no longer the indispensable superfigure, but a normal mortal: the further away you are from her, the smaller she seems.
