Many hundreds of thousands of years ago, people liked to hunt for the biggest prey. They lured elephants and other large herbivores into swamps or pits and beat them with wooden spears. It was probably worth it, because the whole clan could then feed on a single animal killed. But at some point the large animals became rare. They disappeared completely from some areas – and that wasn’t just bad for the animals, it also plunged the hunters into a crisis. What to do?
