Diagnosis podcast: an infant suffers from fever and diarrhea – it is to blame for animal roommates

“The diagnosis”
An infant suffers from fever and diarrhea – it is due to animal roommates

A baby keeps getting fever and severe diarrhea. A doctor finally finds the reason: he has to do with the roommates.

For days, an infant has been getting a fever and severe, sometimes bloody diarrhea. The parents had already been to the pediatrician and the clinic, but the examinations had not revealed any cause. Infusions made the child better in terms of time, but now that they are back home, the symptoms intensify again. Diarrhea can be particularly dangerous for infants due to the high fluid loss.

Persistent fever and diarrhea are often caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. The attending physician mentally goes through possible diarrhea pathogens. The baby is still fully breastfed and therefore does not consume any food apart from breast milk, which excludes the ingestion of a pathogen through food. Some viruses can also be transmitted via mucous membranes, droplet or smear infections. Could the baby have picked up such a pathogen? A tip from the father finally leads the doctors on the right track: The animal roommates are to blame.

“Die Diagnose” – listen to the episodes of the last season

The podcast “Die Diagnose” with Anika Geisler appears every two weeks – on AudioNow, the platform of RTL Radio Deutschland, and on Spotify and iTunes. In the sixth season, exciting cases of illness were resolved:

  • The powerless girl: A child becomes more and more flabby, his arms and legs become emaciated, the stomach becomes larger. The treating clinic discovers the reason: it is rare and life-threatening.

  • Like wildfire: A young man has stomach aches, headaches and a fever, as well as heart problems, shortness of breath and kidney problems. A team of doctors discovers what this has to do with a new childhood disease.

  • “What is an ambulance?” A patient suddenly forgets the meaning of words.

  • Forces in the night: A man comes to the emergency room with a sore throat. Doctors discover a large bruise in the throat. Did he fall or was he strangled? The patient reports that he is often tired during the day – a doctor pricks up his ears.

  • Insidious rash: It is difficult for a man to breathe during physical exertion. A doctor finds the reason: It was six months ago and was red and painful.

  • On the wrong path: A boy has a stomach ache. Sure thing, the appendix – it seems. But the doctor makes a surprising discovery at one point.

  • Doctor phone: A child often has rattling breaths and infections. Is it germs from the daycare? Eventually the real reason is discovered: an annoying holdover.

  • Painful seasoning: A woman has had a stomach ache after eating for decades. A doctor discovers how her conscious diet is related.
