DFB Cup: Union uses Pauli’s slip for the semifinals

Status: 03/01/2022 10:37 p.m

1. FC Union has reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time since 2001. The Berliners won 2-1 against FC St. Pauli and took advantage of slips by Hamburg on both goals.

The club will find out who Union will meet in the semifinals on Sunday (March 6th, 2022) from 7.15 p.m. in the sports show during the draw.

Coach Urs Fischer’s team was a little lucky, but deserved, because of their opponent’s mishaps. Sheraldo Becker (45th) and Andreas Voglsammer (75th) met cor 10,000 spectators at the Alte Försterei after Daniel Kyereh had given the second division team the lead (21st).

“Penalized for two individual errors”

“We were severely punished by two individual mistakes. You can’t afford that against such an opponent,” said St. Paulis Leart Paqarada of the sports show.

Union’s Christopher Trimmel praised the fact that after the loss of Max Kruse, who moved to VfL Wolfsburg, the team “has moved even closer together. That always sounds stupid, but it’s really the case with us.”

Minute of silence and sign for peace

Before kick-off, both teams commemorated the victims of the war in Ukraine and sent a message for peace. The war cannot be ignored, St. Pauli’s coach Timo Schultz had previously told Sportschau: “The topic is omnipresent. You hold a team meeting, leave the room, there is a monitor hanging on the wall and the images are running. ” The artillery fire “makes you afraid”.

Kyereh scores from a free kick

1. FC Union determined the initial phase. Already in the first minute Grischa Prömel had a very good chance to head the ball. St. Pauli, who eliminated Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16, relied on a defensive 5-3-2 and counterattack.

The first was played sloppily, the second resulted in a free kick that brought the lead. Kyereh hit a bounce from almost 20 yards out (21′). Frederik Rönnow, who stood in goal for Andreas Luthe again in the cup, looked bad.

Two mistakes by goalkeepers

The goalkeeper, who is used in the league, was also only on the bench for Hamburg. Dennis Smarsch stood between the posts instead of Nikola Vasilj and saved his team from equalizing in the 32nd minute after a shot by Becker. Niko Gießelmann had previously missed a good chance to make it 1-1.

A few seconds before the end of the first half, however, Smarsch slipped in the penalty area, allowing Taiwo Awoniyi to get the ball. St. Pauli’s goalkeeper saved the shot, but Becker used the rebound to equalize. “But the mistake starts with the long ball” from Timo Baumgartl, analyzed sports show expert Bastian Schweinsteiger, “there they are badly staggered”.

19-year-old Marcel Beifus, who replaced the injured Philipp Ziereis in the starting XI, lost the running duel with Awoniyi.

Twice Medić against Voglsammer

It took some time after the break to get a good chance. It ultimately came about after a header from Prömel for substitute Voglsammer, who, however, was blocked by Jakov Medić with a tough effort, close to a penalty penalty (68′).

A little later the duel happened again. Medić was clearly in the better position, controlled the ball but then slipped. Voglsammer accepted the gift and scored to make it 2-1 for the Bundesliga side (75′). It was the shot to the semifinals, which will be played on April 19th and 20th. The fact that Voglsammer missed a big chance in added time and only hit the post did not take revenge.

After 2001, Union has made it into the last four teams for the second time. 21 years ago they even made it into the final, which they lost 2-0 to FC Schalke 04.

Three quarterfinal games on Wednesday

The other three quarter-finals are scheduled for Wednesday (March 2nd, 2022). The sports show broadcasts the game between VfL Bochum and SC Freiburg live in the stream and in the first.

Union now in Wolfsburg, St. Pauli against KSC

In the Bundesliga, the Berliners will continue on Saturday (March 5th, 2022) at VfL Wolfsburg. FC St. Pauli receives Karlsruher SC on the same day, a class lower.
