DFB Cup: Quarterfinals Saarbrücken – Gladbach wobbles! | Sports

Cup hit in danger!

The quarter-final between 1. FC Saarbrücken and Borussia Mönchengladbach scheduled for tonight (8:45 p.m.) is shaky.

Due to the heavy rain in Saarbrücken, there is plenty of water on the playing field in Ludwigspark. Helpers are currently trying to drive the amount of water away from the pitch with leaf blowers in order to dry the lawn and make it playable.

Referee Florian Badstübner (Nuremberg) must make the final decision about a possible cancellation. After an initial inspection of the pitch, the plan is that the decision will be made when both teams are warming up.

“We have to wait and see what happens,” said Mönchengladbach’s sports director Nils Schmadtke with a laugh: “We definitely don’t have the rubber boots with us.”

Gladbach posted on “X” (formerly Twitter) two hours before the game was scheduled to start: “Good evening from Saarbrücken! 🌧️ The final measures are still being taken here.”

It currently seems questionable whether the measures will be sufficient if the rain remains constant.

The battered lawn in Saarbrücken’s Ludwigspark has been a big topic recently. Because of the constant rain at the moment, the pitch was covered in advance with a special tarpaulin.

Sports director Jürgen Luginger (55) already predicted: “It will certainly not be easy for both teams on these pitch conditions. The fact that it’s still raining at the moment certainly doesn’t make the place any better.”

It wasn’t until Tuesday evening that there was good news for the third division club: The Saarbrücken city council voted on a renovation or a new building and decided: Saarbrücken is getting a new lawn!

However, it will not be moved until the summer break. But the decision comes too late for today’s cup game…
