Defending champion Leipzig out – Union loses again

Defending champions RB Leipzig were eliminated in the second round of the DFB Cup. The Champions League participant lost 0-1 (0-1) to Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday evening when they were outnumbered and experienced their first big disappointment of the season.

For Union Berlin, however, the end at VfB Stuttgart was the continuation of a crisis that had been going on for weeks. The 0-1 (0-1) against the Swabians was the eleventh defeat in a row for the Berliners, who are also competing in the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history this season. Fourth division team FC 08 Homburg caused a surprise with a 2-1 (1-0) win against second division team SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
Wolfsburg throws RB out
Vaclav Cerny scored for Wolfsburg in the 14th minute against Leipzig, who had won the DFB Cup in the last two years. Yussuf Poulsen was shown a yellow-red card in the 56th minute, meaning Leipzig played outnumbered for more than half an hour. VfB Stuttgart took the lead just before half-time through Deniz Undav (45th minute), who once again represented the injured Serhou Guirassy well. Union coach Urs Fischer saw the red card after the final whistle.
In Homburg, Phil Harres became the celebrated winning goal scorer. He scored in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1 and gave the club from the Regionalliga Süd a place in the round of 16 at the beginning of December. Fabian Eisele had given the hosts the lead (31′), Fürth managed to equalize through Branimir Hrgota (52′).
