Deutsche Bahn makes a loss of two billion euros: Why the railway is optimistic – Economy

Deutsche Bahn went deep into the red in 2023. The group loss was 2.4 billion euros, as the state-owned company announced. The main reasons are high expenses for the ailing network and a slump in profits at the freight forwarding subsidiary Schenker. In 2022, the loss was only 227 million euros and sales were more than 56 billion euros. Revenues now fell to 45 billion euros.

Nevertheless, the group plans to return to profitability in 2024. At least without interest and tax payments (EBIT), the plus should be more than one billion euros, after minus 964 million euros in 2023.

The international freight forwarding subsidiary Schenker, which was put up for sale, only made a profit of 1.1 billion euros last year. The logistics company – which includes ships, planes and trucks – felt that the high freight rates were returning to normal as the Corona crisis ebbed. In 2022, Schenker achieved a record profit of 1.8 billion euros.
