Two Ukrainians killed – police arrest Russian citizens

In Murnau, Bavaria, in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, two men were killed in front of a shopping center on Saturday. A 36-year-old died from his serious injuries on site, the police announced on Saturday evening.

A 23-year-old was initially taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he also later died. According to police, both victims were Ukrainian citizens, who lived in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. They each died from stab wounds.

The police arrested a 57-year-old suspect that evening, who lives near the crime scene. According to the information, this is him a Russian national. The investigating judge issued an arrest warrant for double murder on Sunday.

The background to the crime is still completely unclear. The police were initially unable to say whether the three men knew each other. “We are still at the very beginning of the investigation,” said police spokesman Daniel Katz.

The spokesman said the crime occurred around 5:15 p.m. in front of a grocery store in the small town. The perpetrator initially fled. As part of the search, the 57-year-old suspect was caught very quickly. The officers discovered him at his home address near the crime scene.

“If it turns out that the background to the dispute was Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, this would be a catastrophe for the region,” said Free Voters parliamentary group leader Florian Streibl on Sunday. “It must not be the case that this conflict takes place here in the Oberland.” (AFP, dpa)
