Tottenham ‘shortlist striker’ Arsenal failed to sign after three-year transfer mission | Football | Sport

Tottenham have reportedly shortlisted former Arsenal target Jonathan David in their search for a potential Harry Kane replacement. Despite chairman Daniel Levy rejecting Bayern Munich’s latest offer for Kane, Spurs are reportedly scouring the market for possible alternatives.

Bayern are prepared to pay a club-record fee for Kane but reportedly remain £25million from Levy’s sky-high asking price. The Bundesliga champions attempted to thrash out a deal with Levy over lunch on Monday.

However, those talks failed to reach the conclusion Bayern were desperate for, with Spurs keeping their star man for now. Kane is now likelier to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That has not stopped Spurs searching for replacements should the 30-year-old leave, though. One contender to replace Kane is reportedly Lille star David.

According to Caught Offside, Canada international David is one of the players shortlisted by the north Londoners. The 23-year-old is one of Ligue 1’s most promising players.

David struck 23 top-flight goals last season, primarily playing as a centre-forward. He can also play either side of a front three, making him a strong fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system.

The attacker was previously linked with Spurs’ north London and Premier League rivals Arsenal. The Gunners’ reported interest spans back to 2020 when Football London claimed they were searching for replacements for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

But despite continued reported interest in David over the last three years, Arsenal have failed to acquire a player who has bagged 52 league goals in the last three seasons.

Spurs’ new head coach held crunch talks with Kane after the forward returned to pre-season training in mid-July. Speaking about those discussions, Postecoglou said: “I had a good chat with Harry.

“It was nothing earth-shattering as people are seeking. Just a good chat, introduced myself, and we spoke mainly about the club, where it’s at and where he thinks can improve. It’s not a specific vision for one person, it’s about the group and we’re perfectly aligned on that – we want to see a successful team this year.”
