The eccentric genius, who delighted in punishing naughty children, was memorably originated by Gene Wilder in Mel Stuart’s 1971 beloved classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

The casting of Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa in the film was met with controversy after the decision was criticized by an actor with dwarfism, who argued the part should have been offered to an actor with the condition as there is a lack of roles for dwarfs.

The Oompa-Loompas — small workers in the factory that Wonka imported from Loompaland — were played by actors with dwarfism in two previous films based on Roald Dahl’s iconic children’s book.

Wonka is directed by Paul King, who is behind the successful Paddington films.

Other members of the Wonka cast included: Matt Lucas, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson and Olivia Colman.
