Seeing the Climate Crisis Through the Eyes of Henry Thoreau
1.
The path to Walden, as you walk north along the western edge of Adams Woods, comes to a fork just beyond the Concord line. If you’re heading to Henry Thoreau’s most famous pond, take the trail to the right for a half mile or so, keeping the swampy Andromeda meadows below you on the left, until you cross the tracks
World’s scientists say disastrous climate change is here – POLITICO

The long-feared era of disastrous climate change has arrived.
For the first time, the planet’s top scientists said in a monumental report released on Monday they have definitively linked greenhouse gas emissions to the type of disasters driven by a warmer climate that have touched every corner of the globe this year: Extreme rainfall in Germany and China, brutal droughts in the western U.S., a record cyclone in the Philippines and compound events
How Germany’s big parties line up on climate, mobility policy – POLITICO

BERLIN — When it comes to tackling climate change, Germany’s leading political parties aren’t exactly on the same page.
While all four main parties focus on measures to slash the country’s carbon emissions, there are stark differences in how they plan to do so in practice, according to a POLITICO analysis of the manifestos of the Christian Democrats, the Greens, the Social Democrats and the Free Democrats ahead of federal elections set for
Obituary: Carbon Tax, Beloved Climate Policy, Dies at 47
The American carbon tax, an alluringly simple policy once hailed by environmentalists, scholars, and politicians as a cure-all for climate change that, for all its elegance in economic models, could not overcome its enduring unpopularity with the American public, died last month at its home in Washington, D.C. It was 47.
The death was confirmed by President Joe Biden’s utter lack of interest in passing it.
The carbon tax aimed to reduce carbon-dioxide pollution—which heats the air, acidifies the ocean,
Carbon market overhaul shifts EU’s climate policy focus on industry, fairness – EURACTIV.com
With its proposed reform of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), the European Commission is bringing carbon pricing policies to new areas such as shipping, road transport, and buildings. However, it is the fate of industry and ordinary people that is getting all the political attention.
The EU ETS currently covers the power sector, the manufacturing industry, and intra-EU flights.
With the reform, the Commission proposes to extend the EU carbon market to shipping and aviation while setting up
Mixing trees and crops can help both farmers and the climate
Maxwell Ochoo’s first attempt at farming was a dismal failure.
In Ochieng Odiere, a village near the shores of Kenya’s Lake Victoria, “getting a job is a challenge,” the 34-year-old says. To earn some money and help feed his family, he turned to farming. In 2017, he planted watermelon seeds on his 0.7-hectare plot.
Right when the melons were set to burst from their buds and balloon into juicy orbs, a two-month dry spell hit, and Ochoo’s fledgling watermelons withered.
Protecting forests slows climate change more than mass-planting trees
Between a death and a burial was hardly the best time to show up in a remote village in Madagascar to make a pitch for forest protection. Bad timing, however, turned out to be the easy problem.
This forest was the first one that botanist Armand Randrianasolo had tried to protect. He’s the first native of Madagascar to become a Ph.D. taxonomist at Missouri Botanical Garden, or MBG, in St. Louis. So he was picked to join a 2002 scouting

Why planting tons of trees isn’t enough to solve climate change
Trees are symbols of hope, life and transformation. They’re also increasingly touted as a straightforward, relatively inexpensive, ready-for-prime-time solution to climate change.
When it comes to removing human-caused emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from Earth’s atmosphere, trees are a big help. Through photosynthesis, trees pull the gas out of the air to help grow their leaves, branches and roots. Forest soils can also sequester vast reservoirs of carbon.
Earth holds, by one estimate, as many as 3 trillion
How climate change will widen Europe’s divides – POLITICO

This is the first chapter in The Road to COP26 series.
Climate change isn’t just coming for Europe. It’s coming for the European Union.
Europe’s north will struggle with floods and fires, even with warming at the lowest end of expectations — the Paris Agreement limits of 1.5 or 2 degrees above the pre-industrial global average. But the south will be hammered by drought, urban heat and agricultural decline, driving a wedge
