The first CRISPR therapy approved in the U.S. will treat sickle cell disease

U.S. patients with sickle cell disease now have a novel treatment option: the first-ever CRISPR-based therapy.

On December 8, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the gene-editing therapy for use in patients age 12 years and older. In addition to offering hope of relief for people with severe forms of the painful blood disorder, the treatment, called Casgevy, is the world’s first to genetically tweak cells using the Nobel Prize–winning molecular scissors CRISPR/Cas9 (SN: 10/7/20).

Doctors across the United States will likely soon have two options to protect the youngest humans from RSV.

On August 22, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first RSV vaccine for pregnant people. By vaccinating individuals before they give birth — between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy — immune defenses sparked by the vaccine are transferred to newborns for protection during their first months of life (SN: 4/27/23).

The first gene therapy for muscular dystrophy has been approved for some kids

The first gene therapy for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The therapy can be used in 4- and 5-year-olds with the degenerative muscle disease, the agency announced June 22.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the most common form of the muscle disease, is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, which makes a large protein that acts as a shock absorber to keep muscle cells intact.

Covid vaccine injury bill tops £12MILLION after two dozen backlogged damage claims are approved

Britain’s Covid vaccine injury bill has already surpassed £12million, MailOnline can reveal today amid an ongoing legal fight.

Dozens have been killed or left disabled by jabs deployed during the pandemic.

Under current rules, victims of certain vaccines, including ones used to beat Covid, are entitled to a one-off sum of £120,000 from the Government.

At least 105 claims for the state-funded, financial support have now been approved, taking the total bill so far to £12.6million.

The FDA has approved the first-ever vaccine for RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus hospitalizes tens of thousands of people each year in the United States. Now there’s a powerful new tool against it: the first-ever RSV vaccine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced May 3 that it had granted approval for an RSV vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline to be used in people 60 and older.

RSV is a respiratory virus that causes cold-like symptoms for many people, but can cause serious illness, hospitalization and death for infants and older

Covid UK: Boosters for everyone over 18 as third doses of vaccines are approved for ALL adults

All Britons over the age of 18 were today made eligible for Covid booster vaccines as ministers try to shield against an incoming wave of the Omicron variant — as more cases of the super strain were detected in Scotland and England.

The gap between second and third doses has also been chopped in half to three months with Professor Jonathan Van-Tam claiming that boosters had ‘never been more urgent’.
