Scottie Scheffler chasing down leader at PGA Championship – after shocking 6am arrest on his way to the course… follow along for updates

Disaster for Tiger

Oh no, it’s all gone wrong for Woods. A triple bogey on two, and a bogey on three, has left him languishing down on +5, or 132nd in the leaderboard.

He’s going to have to have a hell of a round to get it back from here.

Birdie for Schauffele

More movement at the top of the tree, with yesterday’s hero Xander Schauffele birdieing the second, to take himself one off the clubhouse leader Morikawa.

He’s now -10, and -1 today thru three holes.

Scheffler ends on -9

The world No. 1 pars the last to seal his round of 66, and he’s T3 for the tournament, two back from the leader.

Scottie on the 18th

The world No. 1, who’s had quite a day, is on his final hole. With his approach shot, he misses the green, and will need to get up and down for par, and a second-round 66 to follow his 67 yesterday. He’s T2 and two shots off the lead (should he make this par… who are we kidding, he’ll make this par).

Tiger and Rory both out on the course

Two huge names now have their rounds underway, with McIlroy trying to challenge the leaders at the top, and Woods desperately trying to make the cut.

It was the perfect start for the former, who has just birdied the first to move to -6 and T8 on the leaderboard, while Woods is level par through one hole.

Morikawa the clubhouse leader

Collin Morikawa has finished his round, ending the day on -11, after a second-round 65 after his first round 66. A brilliant day for the American, and he sits atop the leaderboard after submitting his card.

Whether it stays that way for long is another matter.

Projected cut: who’s missing out?

A long way to go until the halfway point, of course, but right now the cut line sits at even par. There’s plenty of players right on that line, but if it stays where it is, then some big names are going to be heading home.

Among the over-par players currently missing out are:

  • Tiger Woods (+1)
  • Tommy Fleetwood (+1)
  • Ludvig Aberg (+1)
  • Wyndham Clark (+1)
  • Dustin Johnson (+2)
  • Phil Mickelson (+3)

A word for Rich Beem, too – he’s +20 and bottom of the leaderboard.

An update on Scheffler

From Barstool’s Dan Rapoport, a man very much in the know…

And speaking of the previous leader…

It’s time for Xander Schauffele to head out onto the course.

Alongside Ludvig Aberg and Justin Thomas, the 2:38pm starters are on the first tee.

To begin, Aberg stripes one down the middle, and then Schauffele steps up and does the same. Thomas – roared on by the crowd – completed the tee shots, joining his playing partners down the heart of the fairway.

A big few hours to come…

New leader at the PGA Championship

Step forward: Collin Morikawa.

The American has just birdied three straight holes, on 4, 5 and 6, to move up to -10, one ahead of Xander Schauffele, who is yet to tee off today.

Morikawa is bogey-free for the day so far, with five birdies on his scorecard.

Some snaps from around the course…

He. Is. Inevitable.

Another hole, another birdie for that man Scottie Scheffler.

On the 12th, the world No. 1 has just fired into a ridiculous approach to three-foot, before holeing the putt and moving one back from the leader Xander Schauffele.

The crowd liked that a LOT.

Scheffler on the charge

Here he comes… that’s another birdie for Scottie on the second – his 11th hole of the day. He had a five-foot putt and sunk it, straight down the middle of the cup.

That takes him to -7 for the tournament (-3 for the day), and up to T3 on the leaderboard.

Tight at the top

It’s been an incredible day so far for little-known Mark Hubbard, who currently sits -8 for the tournament, and is -2 through six holes today.

The Denver-born golfer, 34, has a best-ever major finish of T51, but is currently second, behind Xander Schauffele.

Four players are then tied for third, with Harris English, Alex Noren, Collin Morikawa and Austin Eckroat all currently out on the course now and battling at -7.

Scheffler is among a five-player group one further back on -6.

Free Scottie!

Back to business for Scottie

When are the other big names heading out?

It’s fair to say Rory McIlroy may welcome a slight distraction from his own saga – a reminder that he announced he is divorcing his wife Erica Stoll on Monday.

He played very well on day one yesterday, and is due out on course at 3pm ET today.

Xander Schauffele, meanwhile, broke the Valhalla course record yesterday, and recorded the joint-lowest score ever in a major championship with his brilliant 62. He’s back out to try and stop atop the leaderboard at 2:38pm ET.

Tiger Woods is right on the cut line at +1 after back-to-back bogeys to finish his first round yesterday, and he’ll have a big fight on his hands when he begins – at 2:49pm ET.

A piece from our reporter at Valhalla…

A check-in on Scottie

It’s calmed down a little bit for the embattled world No. 1 out on the course at Valhalla. After his birdie-bogey-birdie start, he’s settled into his rhythm with three straight pars. He still sits -5 for the tournament, T9 overall and -1 for the day.

Leaderboard right now

Let’s take a little look at how the top of the standings are shaping up…

1: Xander Schauffele (-9)

T2: Tom Kim, Thomas Detry, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, Sahith Theegala, Mark Hubbard (-6)

T8: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Maverick McNealy (-5)

And now a BIRDIE

Never simple for the big fella. On 12 (his third hole), Scheffler has now just rolled in a monster birdie putt (see below).

He’s now back to -5, and T6 on the leaderboard.

And now a bogey for Scheffler

The world No. 1 back down to earth with a bump as he bogeys the second hole, missing a five-foot par putt.

Some more incredible news coming in regarding Scheffler’s arrest this morning.

Here is the full police citation, just released:

Detective Gillis was directing traffic into Gate 1 of the Valhalla Golf Course due to the road being closed in both directions from an earlier fatal collision.

Listed subject was driving eastbound to gain access to the course. Subject pulled into the westbound lanes, where outbound traffic was flowing and to avoid backed up traffic.

Detective Gillis was in the middle of the westbound lanes, in full LMPD uniform and a hi-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket. Dotective Gillis stopped subject and attempted to give instructions.

Subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground. Detective Gillis suffered pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist and knee.

He was transported to the hospital for further medical treatment by emergency medical personnel.

Detective Gillis’ uniform pants, valued at approximately $80 were damaged beyond repair.

A birdie for Scottie

You can’t keep a good man down. Wow. What a start for Scheffler, who puts all the crazy events of the morning behind him to start with a birdie.

His tee shot found the rough down the right-hand side of the fairway, before he nearly sunk his approach for eagle, before tapping in a birdie.

That takes him 6th in the leaderboard at -5.

A word from our reporter

Mail Sport’s Isabel Baldwin was alongside Scheffler on the tee at Valhalla, and she brings us this update…

‘Biggest cheer by far on the tenth for Scottie. People shouted ‘free Scottie’ after his drive, and ‘I need your lawyer’s number’

‘He seemed very calm on the range, hit a few shots, chatted to his team.’

Scheffler on the tee

Here we go… the world No. 1 is about to head onto the course. Let’s see how this first drive goes amid all the pressure he’s been under.

Breaking:SCHEFFLER SPEAKS OUT

We’ve got the first official comments from the world No 1 after his return to Valhalla:

‘This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

‘Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.’

Believe it or not…

…there’s already some golf being played at the PGA Championship this morning.

It’s been a rough morning for Rich Beem, who’s +5 through three holes and +13 for the tournament.

Up the top end of the leaderboard, Harris English birdied the first and has climbed to T11 at -4.
