‘Melt’ away ‘tough’ toilet limescale with ‘better than bleach’ item overnight for just £1

Limescale commonly appears around toilets, showers and taps where hard water is present, occurring as a chalky or red substance.

Posting anonymously on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one user wrote: “I’ve moved into a new house and my toilet is covered in limescale. I’ve tried various products but they don’t seem to be working, any tips?”

More than 50 comments were left on the post from Mrs Hinch fans sharing their top tips, including a “better than bleach” product.

Arlene Mcintyre said: “Use Harpic Power Plus, leave it overnight. It will take a while but it does work.”

Clarissa Reynolds wrote: “Harpic Power Plus is by far the best. Use it three to four times a day until the limescale is gone.”

Stacey Jean commented: “I agree with all of these comments. Harpic in the black bottle is very good. Put lots in and leave it overnight and scrub, scrub. Scrub.”

A lot of other users also suggested using this product which can be picked up from most supermarkets for around £1.

Its description reads: “10 times better than bleach, fast acting, removes limescale, tough stains, rust.

“Did you know that bleach disinfects but leaves limescale, home to germs, behind? Harpic Power Plus with its unique formula removes tough limescale and gets rid of germs, even the ones you cannot see.”

The user replied a few days later writing: “I’ve scrubbed a bit and it started to melt away.”

According to experts, Britons should use white vinegar to target a build up of stubborn limescale.

Checkatrade experts said: “Boil water and pour it over the limescale build-up, then use a brush to scrub the areas.

“Pour vinegar over the limescale and let it sit for a few minutes. Use a brush to scrub it off.

“Use a commercial cleaner specifically designed to remove limescale. Whichever you choose, be sure to rinse the area thoroughly afterwards to remove any remaining chemicals or vinegar.

“If limescale build-up is severe, it may take a few tries before it’s completely removed.”

Make sure to disinfect the cleaning brush after using it to help stop germs spreading in the bathroom.
