Man Utd ‘refusing to give Rasmus Hojlund a shirt number’ as plan comes to light | Football | Sport

Manchester United are stalling over Rasmus Hojlund’s shirt number, according to reports. With other transfer deals in the pipeline, Erik ten Hag is keen to wait and assess the make-up of his squad before making a final decision regarding what will appear on the back of the Dane’s famous red jersey.

Hojlund is set to play an important role in United’s forthcoming season after completing a £72million switch from Atalanta. The striker was unveiled in front of his new fans before a friendly against Lens this weekend.

Numbers 13 and 15 are currently vacant at Old Trafford, with the most sought-after attacking numbers already occupied by the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

According to The Daily Mail, United are refusing to assign one to Hojlund just yet as they would prefer to wait until various transfer negotiations have run their course with movement expected next week.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with Sofyan Amrabat and Leon Goretzka, suggesting that Ten Hag is intent on beefing up his midfield options over the coming days. There will be no rush to give Hojlund his number as he faces weeks on the sidelines after rocking up to Old Trafford with an injury.

The No 11 could soon become vacant as United have finished a lengthy investigation into Greenwood, with their final decision on whether or not to let him go set to be published before their Premier League opener.

The Red Devils had Wout Weghorst on loan for the second half of last season. But after 17 goalless Premier League appearances, Ten Hag decided to send him back to parent club Burnley and look for solutions elsewhere.

Hojlund, 20, is yet to reach double digits over the course of a single league campaign, but he showed great promise at Atalanta last term and has scored six in six for the Danish national team.
