Kate Middleton goes head-to-head with Prince William in netball drills as the couple try out a sport for visually impaired athletes

The Princess of Wales jubilantly punched the air after scoring in a netball exercise today as she and William visited a sports centre.

Kate, 41, donned a blue Zara blazer layered over dark skinny-fit jeans and a white top, plus her trusty white Vejas – but she ditched the jacket to take part in the hoop-scoring exercise at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

After one failed attempt to score, the competitive princess was not to be deterred and quickly composed herself to try again. After the ball went straight through the net, she raised her arms in the air and cried: ‘Yes!’

In another exercise she attempted to score while William was defending the net – but he appeared toput her off her winning streak as she didn’t quite make the hoop.

As the couple arrived in Marlow today to take part in the workshop run by SportsAid (of which Kate is patron), the princess revealed her trampolining injury is still causing her trouble as her fingers were bandaged up once again. Nonetheless, she wasn’t afraid to get stuck in with the activities.

The Princess of Wales, who is known for her competitive streak, beamed as she tried to score a goal while Prince William defended the net

However, Kate resumed her strong performance when she took part in goalball, a sport for visually impaired athletes.

On a course set up like a small pitch, with a goal either end, the Princess was blindfolded while carrying what looked like a heavy blue ball.

She then threw it underarm towards the goal ahead of her, where a blindfolded goalkeeper was tasked with saving it.

However, Kate’s ball went straight into the left side of the goal, leading the sports hall to cheer at her victory.

Next up was William’s turn – but the Prince of Wales took more time to decide how he would approach his attempt at scoring.

He looked pensive and hesitated before throwing the ball towards the goal – but it appeared his attempt had been saved.

In a touching gesture and a nod to the importance of maintaining good mental health, the Princess chose to wear her gold star earrings which she was given earlier this year by a woman who lost her daughter to suicide aged 17.

Today’s engagement follows two days of royal visits from the couple, who are shining a light on mental health awareness in the week of World Mental Health Day.

On Tuesday, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Birmingham where they hosted a youth mental health forum in conjunction with BBC Radio 1.

During the forum, mother-of-three Kate delivered a rare speech in which she discussed the importance of looking after one’s own mental health and having the tools to be able to understand and regulate emotions.

This was followed by separate engagements on Wednesday, which saw Kate visit Nottingham Trent University where she chatted to students about how they look after their own wellbeing, and the resources they receive from their institution.

Meanwhile Prince William headed down to Milton Keynes, where he spoke to emergency responders at a blue light hub. The workers discussed how they look after their emotional and mental wellbeing, given the difficult things they have witnessed in their jobs.

On today’s visit to the workshop, the royal couple will learn how the programme helps and supports young athletes and builds their mental fitness.

As the visit got underway Kate and William sat down with parents of young athletes who are supported by SportsAid – and as a passionate advocate for young people, the Princess of Wales appeared eager to learn about the children.

The couple are teaming up with SportsAid ambassadors including Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds and Commonwealth gold medallist Ama Agbeze.

The royal couple have also tried their hand at netball in practical sessions which test their mental resilience through goal scoring exercises.

Elsewhere, Kate and William are taking part in a game of goalball, which is a Paralympic sport for visually impaired athletes.

The couple’s visit comes as an athlete mental health survey conducted by SportsAid and BelievePerform last month revealed that 42 per cent of young athletes say they ‘occasionally’ feel anxious in their day to day lives.

The study showed that 20 per cent said they felt anxious often, while 40 per cent of people surveyed feel they have little support or do not know how to access support for mental health.

In 2022, Kate and William visited SportsAid’s Team England Futures programme at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

On Tuesday, Kate made a touching gesture to the importance of maintaining good mental health as she debuted her gold star earrings, which she had been given earlier this year by a well wisher.

During her visit to a rugby club, she met bereaved mother Sarah Renton, whose 17-year-old daughter Issy had taken her own life weeks earlier after struggling with depression.

She gave Kate the earrings, which had been designed in Issy’s memory and the proceeds of which were to be given to a mental health charity.

Kate was visibly moved by her interaction with Mrs Renton, who coaches the under-14 boys at the club, and put her arm around the mother before giving her a warm hug.

Mrs Renton later said the Princess had promised to wear the jewellery at a later date in Issy’s memory.
