Jurgen Klopp’s incredible Liverpool business laid bare as Erik ten Hag left wide open | Football | Sport

Jurgen Klopp’s incredible Liverpool business has seen him record a smaller net spend in eight seasons than Erik ten Hag has managed in two years, leaving the Manchester United manager wide open for criticism. The signings of Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana have taken the Red Devil’s spend to over £164millon this summer alone.

Last season was seen as a success for United fans as they lifted the EFL Cup, finishing third in the Premier League and being beaten finalists to Manchester City in the FA Cup. However, in Ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, he spent £209million bringing in the likes of Anthony (£82m), Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.

The sales of Andreas Pereira (£8.2m) and Anthony Elanga (£15.1) have helped to offset the huge transfer outlay along with recouping £1.7m for loaning out Eric Bailly to Marseille. United’s total net spend over the two seasons is £341m which is bigger than the net spend of £323m that Liverpool have spent in eight seasons.

During his eight-year tenure as manager Klopp has lifted the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League. However, the incredible business from Klopp has kept their net spend low compared to some of their rivals.

Last season saw Liverpool finish in a lowly fifth compared to their recent success with Klopp moving to strengthen his midfield during the summer transfer window. The signings of Dominik Szoboszlai (£60m) and Alexis Mac Allister (£36m) have seen Klopp spend £96m already this summer.

However, the duo have been offset by the departures of Fabinho (£40m) and Jordan Henderson (£12m). Klopp used a similar tactic last season bringing in Darwin Nunez for £69m which was offset by the sale of Sadio Mane for £27m.
