Princess Kate’s fans have quickly come to the royal’s defence after a former Vogue editor said the Princess of Wales was a “disappointment” in her approach to jewellery.
Suzy Menkes, 79, made the scathing comments on the latest episode of her podcast, Creative Conversations, where she conducts interviews with those in the fashion industry.
But fans praised Princess Kate’s ability to wear a mix of high-end and affordable pieces saying some items are a “sell out” the moment she puts them on.
One fan on social media wrote: “I think people forget that Catherine is a young modern princess. And likewise, she has her own personal style that quickly becomes a designer’s success.”
Another fan of Princess Kate’s style said: “The Princess of Wales has an excellent eye for accessories, and her earrings collection is stunning – particularly because she often promotes small businesses by wearing their jewellery. She has just the right mix of affordable and high-end jewellery in her wardrobe.”
Another fan, @Juliann19214171, wrote: “The Princess’s style is impeccable, formal for formal occasions, smart casual for ‘greet the people’ and very casual for off-duty days with the kids. Her jewelleryis always appropriate.”
Whereas another Twitter user, @TraceyALee72 praised Princess Kate for her “recycled” outfits and “beautiful costume jewellery pieces” calling her “the Queen of Mix & match”.
The critic, who was awarded an OBE by the late Queen for her contribution to fashion journalism in 2014, invited the British Vogue’s jewellery editor Carol Woolton on the show where they also discussed the Princess of Wales’s recent outfits.
Speaking about jewellery items in particular, Ms Menkes claimed: “The Princess of Wales is a bit of a disappointment about jewellery. She gives the impression that she only puts it on when she absolutely has to.”
“I imagine her looking beautiful in one of those gowns behind the scenes and then pulling a face as if to say, ‘Do I have to wear this? She doesn’t give any sense of adoring jewellery and being pleased to put it on.”
The fashion expert also emphasised how Queen Camilla, on the other hand, seems to be much more interested in jewellery. Ms Menkes added: “She doesn’t seem to have Camilla’s joy at wearing jewellery.”
The Princess of Wales wears a combination of jewellery from the Royal Collection and other items she has purchased from the high street since she married into the Royal Family.
However, the critic remains on the fence about whether Kate’s attitude towards jewellery will change as she edges closer to the throne.
She continued: “We now have a new Queen, so presumably she has a first opportunity to look at the jewels.”
