Coco Gauff ‘was ready to jump into’ crowd after fan fell ill at Citi Open | Tennis | Sport

“I did ask the ref if it was cardiac. I’m sure there are more professional people out here, but she said it wasn’t cardiac so that’s when I realised the person will probably be OK.

“But yeah, everybody in the stadium should take the class. It took 90 minutes. I booked it on the flight from Wimbledon, it’s really informative.”

Speaking to reporters afterwards she revealed that she wanted to take the course after witnessing her father perform CPR on a person who did not survive. She was also prompted to learn CPR when fellow US tennis star and world number four Jessica Pegula saw her sister Kelly perform CPR on their mother last year.

“I was like, ‘OK, I need to do it.’ I learned so much,” Gauff said. “I was hoping I wouldn’t have to do anything today, but if it came to that point, at least I learned that.”

Gauff managed to win the game in straight sets, 6-1 6-2. The victory sees her progress to the semifinals where she will face Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova. An all-American final remains a possibility with Gauff’s doubles partner, and top seed Pegula facing Maria Sakkari in the other semi-final.

The tournament is also Gauff’s first with her new coach Brad Gilbert and a second title of the year is now just two wins away.
