Bondi Beach drowning: Swimmer, 82, dies in St Vincent’s hospital after he was pulled from the surf

An elderly man has died in hospital despite the efforts of multiple rescue crews to save him after the swimmer was pulled from the surf on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.

The incident occurred about 10am when offficers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were called to Bondi Beach, Bondi, following reports a person had been pulled from the water.

The 82-year-old man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to St Vincent’s hospital in a critical condition, where he later died.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

Earlier, a Toll Rescue ambulance helicopter and at least a dozen police officers had scrambled to the location after reports of a man getting into trouble in the water.

Paramedics were seen attending to the man, who appeared to have blood on his forehead. 

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance told Daily Mail Australia: ‘NSW Ambulance was called to the vicinity of the life guard tower on Bondi Beach this morning just after 9am.

‘Paramedics crews attended to a man at the beach.’ 

The patient was conveyed by road to St Vincent’s Public Hospital at Darlinghurst.  

NSW Police said early reports indicated the man had suffered a medical episode.
