Despite EU sanctions, teak continues to be imported into the EU – Economy

Despite strict trade sanctions against the military regime in Myanmar, valuable teak from the Southeast Asian country continues to reach the European Union. A year ago, an international research project entitled “Deforestation Inc.” revealed that the sought-after tropical wood is apparently being brought into the EU in violation of existing regulations. The revelations were from International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) been coordinated, in Germany they were involved Southgerman newspaperNDR, WDR and the Mirror involved. New research has now shown that even after the deliveries became known, wood worth 5.6 million euros was imported from Myanmar to the EU between January and October 2023 alone.
