England’s penalty-takers Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka were racially insulted by a minority of small-minded football fans on social media after the lost European Championship final against Italy.

For example, the latest Instagram post by 19-year-old Saka from Arsenal FC immediately found dozens of comments, the content of which were the most nasty insults and curses. The Metropolitan Police opened an investigation and announced that the insults would “not be tolerated”.

The English association FA was “disgusted” by racism on the Internet and stressed that this type of fan was “not welcome”. In addition, the government was asked to finally pass the necessary laws to put an end to insults on the Internet. Clearly in the majority, however, were constructive short messages.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemns the insults

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also condemned the racist abuse. “This England team deserves to be praised as heroes and not to be racially insulted on social media,” wrote Johnson on Monday (07/12/2021) on Twitter. “Those responsible for these appalling abuse should be ashamed,” added the prime minister.

Rashford and Sancho came on late

A user wrote to the young winger Saka, who had played a good tournament: “Cheer up, buddy, you are so young, nobody blames you. You are a huge talent.”

In addition to Saka, Rashford and Sancho had also shot. Both team manager Gareth Southgate came on as supposedly safe shooters in the 120th minute.
