Death on the Zugspitze: climber falls 400 meters – Bavaria

An eyewitness saw the man on the Höllental via ferrata being hit by a snow slide and being swept away. Eleven other climbers who were there had to be rescued by helicopter.

A climber fell on the Zugspitze on Friday and died. He fell about 400 meters over the steepest rocky terrain, as the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South announced on Saturday.

An eyewitness had stated that the previously unknown man was alone on the Höllental via ferrata on Friday. Shortly below the summit near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he was caught in a small snow slide and swept away. The rescue workers who were called could only have determined the death of the man.

Eleven other climbers who were also on the Höllental via ferrata had to be rescued by helicopter. Investigations into the cause of the accident and the identity of the deceased are ongoing. The police are currently not assuming third-party negligence.
