Deadly attack on Shiite shrine in Iran

According to state media, one person was killed in an attack on a Shiite shrine in southern Iran. Eight other people were injured. One attacker was arrested.

One person was killed and eight others injured in an attack on a major Shiite pilgrimage site in Shiraz in southern Iran. This is reported by the official Irna news agency, citing the deputy governor of Fars province. One of the suspected attackers was arrested, the second is still at large, according to the media.

Shrine target as early as 2022

According to the information, the attack was directed against the shrine Shah Cheragh in the city of Shiraz – this had already been the scene of a deadly attack in 2022. In October last year, 13 people were killed and 30 others injured. The jihadist militia Islamic State (IS) later claimed responsibility for the attack.
