After violent attacks on Ukraine, authorities are reporting deaths and injuries in several cities in the country. Dnipro is particularly affected – but there are also fatalities in Kiev, Kharkiv, Odessa and Lviv.

According to Ukrainian sources, at least twelve people have been killed and more than 70 injured across the country in a new wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The power also went out in many cities. The Ministry of Energy announced that the north and south of the country would be affected.

Worst attack in a long time

Air force spokesman Yuri Ihnat said on Ukrainian news television that they had not seen so many “red enemy targets” on the monitors for a long time. “S 300” rockets, various cruise missiles and long-range drones of Iranian design were used. Around 18 strategic bombers were in the air.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj spoke on X, formerly Twitter, of around 110 rockets – most of which were fired by Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized that it was one of the worst attacks on Ukraine to date.

Dead and injured after attack on Kiev

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least two people had died in the attacks in the capital Kiev. In addition, at least seven people are being treated in hospitals as a result of the attacks. There were explosions there, as Mayor Klitschko announced on the Telegram online service. Injured people are still lying under the rubble.

A subway station used as an air raid shelter was damaged. According to the city administration, a residential building caught fire due to falling debris. A warehouse is also on fire. Klitschko further explained that the anti-aircraft defense system in Kiev was in full operation. Also ARD correspondent Vassili Golod in Kiev describes the rocket fire on X.

“Economist” correspondent Oliver Carroll also reported on X that a rocket hit the Ukrainian capital.

Attack on Kharkiv in several waves

The governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Synegubow, also said that there had been one death in attacks on Kharkiv in the northeast of the country and that other people had been injured.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov spoke of a “massive attack” in three waves. He said on television that 22 attacks had been counted. A hospital, several residential buildings and industrial facilities were hit. Kharkiv region police said the city was attacked in the morning with S 300 rockets.

Hatched: territories occupied by Russia

Dead in Lviv and Odessa

According to authorities, a residential building was hit by a rocket in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. One person died and three others were injured, as the region’s governor, Maksym Kosyzkyj, announced on the short message service Telegram. Lviv is located in western Ukraine around 70 kilometers from the border with Poland and is comparatively rarely the target of attacks.

According to official information, rockets also hit Odessa. Authorities in the port city reported two deaths and at least 15 injuries. According to Mayor Hennadij Trukhanov, a high-rise building there caught fire in “another enemy attack.” It was hit by debris from a downed drone.

Several dead in Dnipro

Five people were killed and more than 20 others injured in the eastern city of Dnipro, local authorities said. According to the region’s governor, a maternity hospital and a shopping center were hit. The Health Ministry said an unspecified medical facility in the city was significantly damaged. However, all patients and employees were able to get to safety. “Economist” correspondent Carroll posted a video on X that is supposed to show shelling in the morning.

Destruction also in Sumy and Konotop

Air alerts were sounded across the country. Nighttime attacks were also reported in the cities of Sumy and Konotop. The Southern Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said 14 attack drones were destroyed and there were no reports of casualties. So far there have been no comments from Russia. However, Russia said it had foiled an “attempted” Ukrainian drone strike. This targeted the Kursk region in western Russia.

Last US aid for Ukraine for now

The chief of staff of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, once again asked Ukraine’s Western allies for further military aid. “We are doing everything we can to strengthen our air raid shield. But the world must realize that we need more support and strength to stop this terror,” wrote Jermak on the Telegram online service.

On Wednesday, the USA released its last military aid for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia in February 2022, amounting to $250 million. That’s the equivalent of a good 226 million euros. An agreement on new aid to Ukraine from next year recently failed due to resistance from the opposition Republicans in the US Congress.
