Daytime café Deli Kitchen in Giesing: Veggie without anyone noticing – Munich

On the right a student with a laptop, next to her an older couple and a mother with a baby outside – the Deli Kitchen does not attract a specific target group, but everyone who wants to escape the bustling Giesing for a moment. This works wonderfully on Gietlstrasse. On the way there you stroll through narrow, colorful streets to a pale yellow house. When the weather is good, there are beer benches under a red and white awning in front of the door, and inside, colorful pictures hang over wooden tables.

The café is hip and, with a few vegetarian exceptions, people eat and drink vegan here. There are trendy drinks like Matcha Latte or Golden Milk. But the restaurant isn’t the kind of place where guests come just for pretty Instagram pictures. Rather, it is a place that invites you to spend long mornings here. And without the plate being pulled away when the last bite is still on the fork. The Deli Kitchen has potential as a regular café.

This is also a good place to sit outdoors.

What is there and how much does it cost?

The menu is classic but solid. A hit are the pancakes (9.50 euros), which on the menu look like they taste very healthy (vegan and with spelled flour), but they are slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy and sweet on the inside – a better start to the meal could be not be a day at all. The muesli or smoothie bowls, on the other hand, are actually healthy.

If you prefer something hearty, you can order bread with goat cheese or avocado. The latter sounds ordinary, but is surprising thanks to the sesame, a bunch of sprouts and a sour balsamic cream (9.80 euros). Unfortunately, vegan scrambled eggs on toast are only available on weekends, but the daily selection of cakes is even larger. However, the vegan whipped cream is only for those who like it really sweet.

At lunchtime, a queue can sometimes form in the small shop; working people pick up a salad, pasta or a piece of quiche to take away during their break. You can also order the food via various delivery services or in the café itself.

We also recommend the Deli Spezial, a fruity, spicy homemade hibiscus-ginger lemonade (4.50 euros). The Chai Latte for just under five euros, on the other hand, could use a little more taste. After all, you don’t pay any extra for vegan milk alternatives here. You can also buy regional organic honey and coffee from a family business.

Moqo Saine, the owner of the café, has worked in organic retail for 25 years and good food is very important to him. The 46-year-old is pleased that his shop attracts a wide range of customers, often including “omnivores who don’t even notice that we are veggie. That’s the best case scenario when people don’t miss anything,” he says. The concept was well received from the start and they now have many regular customers.

If you can’t get enough of the Deli Kitchen, you can simply move on to the second location in the evening, to the café bar in Haidhausen.
