Danny Boyle reveals in an interview why his ideas for “James Bond” went too far for the producers: “It was really a shame.”

The 25th “James Bond” film “No Time to Die” finally came out in cinemas last year after numerous postponements. Before that there were many problems, injuries, Corona – and a change behind the camera. Now star director Danny Boyle (65) has revealed what he planned to do with Bond in his version of the film.

The “Trainspotting” director was originally committed to the franchise – but left again in 2018 due to creative differences and was replaced by Cary Fukunaga (44). The “Esquire” magazine he now shares the concerns he had from the start: “Because they don’t really want anything else. They want something refreshed, but they don’t really want renewal and we wanted to do something new with it.”

James Bond at his roots in Russia

Accordingly, the Bond would have played mainly in Russia and dealt with the past of the secret agent. “Oddly – it would have been very relevant now – it all took place in Russia, which of course Bond came from, from the Cold War. It’s set in modern-day Russia and goes back to its roots,” Boyle said. However, the producers would then have lost confidence in the story. “It was really a shame,” recalls the director.

It is unlikely that Boyle and the franchise will make another attempt, as he also clarified: “I don’t think so,” is his answer to the question.
