The head of the VW works council, Daniela Cavallo, has called for a stronger role for the trade unions in industrial restructuring and for a rapid reform of co-determination in companies. “Our 50-year-old works constitution has long since fallen behind social and technological developments in too many places,” she said at an event in Lübeck. In addition, IG Metall and other unions should actively help shape the upheavals in the areas of electrification, digitization and artificial intelligence, as well as the debates about global social, environmental and product standards.
