The decision was made in coordination with the aviation security authorities of Hamburg and Lower Saxony. The security situation was reassessed and the light installation was finally canceled. At the dress rehearsal and at the premiere on Thursday, the art event was massively disrupted by foreign high-speed drones, it said. There were several collisions and, as a result, numerous drones crashed.
Culture Senator Carsten Brosda: “Attack on the freedom of art”
The culture senator of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, Carsten Brosda (SPD), was dismayed by the drone attacks on the kinetic work of art: Targeted disruptions to the art installation by the DRIFT studio would not only prevent thousands from experiencing the “Breaking Waves” light show, Brosda pointed out Twitter. “This is obviously also an attack on the freedom of art that an open society cannot accept.”
Anonymous drone pilots disrupted ‘Breaking Waves’ light show
According to information from the aviation security authorities, there have never been disruptions to air traffic of this intensity and aggressiveness in Germany. This requires a reassessment of the security situation.
Since it cannot be ruled out that such crimes by anonymous drone pilots could occur again on Friday and in the following days, a continuation of “Breaking Waves” is not responsible for the protection of viewers and employees, according to a press release.
Those responsible at the Elbphilharmonie and the artists from DRIFT are sad and frustrated that they have to cancel the repetition of the light installation, which already delighted thousands of viewers at the premiere.
