Dachauer Moos – Pressure on politics to protect is growing – District of Munich

In the city of Dachau, against the background of the importance of the moors in the face of advancing climate change, an intense debate has broken out about better protection for the endangered “Dachau Moos”, which extends as far as Unterschleißheim and Oberschleißheim. The city council faction “Alliance for Dachau” laments the lack of political ambition of the municipalities involved in the Dachauer Moos Association to preserve the remains of the moorland. With the removal of the peat soil, the area loses its important functions as a cold air generation area, CO₂ storage and agricultural land. Without countermeasures, this will be the case in 30 to 40 years. “Only rewetting can stop or reverse the progressive peat breakdown and preserve the vital functions of the Dachau moss in the long term,” says a press release. The Alliance for Dachau demands that the Dachauer-Moos-Verein submit a status report to the city council on what has been achieved in the past ten years to protect the moss. The association should explain with which specialist committees and nature conservation associations projects are coordinated and whether a development plan has been drawn up as part of regional planning.
