This is what has been waiting impatiently in Prague: around a month after the election, Czech President Zeman declared that he wanted to get the formation of a government off the ground as quickly as possible. The order is expected to be awarded to a five-party coalition.
Czech President Milos Zeman wants to pave the way for the formation of the new government as soon as possible. He sees no problem in appointing the opposition politician Petr Fiala as prime minister, said Zeman in a radio interview.
It was the first time that the sick Zeman spoke up publicly since the parliamentary elections on October 8th and 9th. As head of state, he gives the mandate to form a government. On October 10, the 77-year-old was hospitalized and taken to the intensive care unit. His health had raised questions about the post-election procedure.
Key role of the president
Now Zeman said he felt good and wanted to fulfill his mandate by 2023. Fiala from the Democratic Citizens’ Party (DOS) wants to lead a coalition of five individual parties. The center-right alliance together and the liberal formation pirates / mayors had won 108 of the 200 seats in the lower house of parliament.
Babis refused government mandate
However, before the election, Zeman had announced that the government mandate would go to the strongest individual party – again to the populist ANO of the previous Prime Minister Andrej Babis. But this had stated that he would reject a government contract.
