Culture of remembrance: 18 more stumbling blocks are laid in Würzburg – Bavaria

The campaign, in which students from several schools take part, is intended to commemorate the victims of the National Socialists.

Next Monday, November 28, Stolpersteine will be laid in Würzburg for the 32nd time to commemorate the victims of the National Socialists. Between 9.30 a.m. and 1.45 p.m., a total of 18 stumbling blocks will be laid in the city area, as the Würzburg stumbling block working group announced on Wednesday. Pupils from several schools are taking part in memorial campaigns at the various locations. After the 32nd laying, there are more than 681 stumbling blocks in Würzburg – more than in any other Bavarian city. The stumbling blocks project by the artist Gunter Demnig started in 1992 and, with more than 75,000 stumbling blocks in more than 25 countries, is the largest decentralized memorial in the world. The stones, small square bronze slabs the size of a cobblestone with information about the people, are always embedded in the ground in front of the last self-chosen places of residence of the Nazi victims. The city with the second most stumbling blocks in Bavaria is Regensburg with more than 200 pieces. The Würzburg working group has been active for around 15 years.
