Culture in Munich: What’s on in the theater in April? – Munich

It’s always interesting to find out what actors are currently working on. One person, for example, said that he would soon be attending an evening where “the big cutlery” would be brought out. It’s not hard to see that it’s more of a massive production, to be more precise: Stefan Pucher is directing it at the Residenztheater – and he has taken Herman Melville’s famous novel Moby Dick chosen to adapt it for the stage. Great text, well-known director – it is obvious that the Residenztheater will not make a mess on April 19th, but will make a big impact. And so it’s off to the big stage to tell the story of Captain Ahab and his obsessive battle against the white whale.

The “big cutlery” generally seems to be brought out in the month of April. Wherever you sit down, some famous or at least well-known name or title or a big festival is served. This also applies to small venues such as the Central Theater. Lea Ralfs will be there on April 9th Harold and Maude on stage – based on the cult film of the same name from 1971, a strange love story with a high quality of memory similar to the soundtrack by Cat Stevens. Sascha Fersch is staging at the Hofspielhaus on April 23rd Kafka, Otto, Huber. It is a distillation of Franz Kafka’s “The Trial”, implemented with Mira Huber and the former James Bond villain Götz Otto. And the acting students from the Otto Falckenberg School will be devoting themselves to this on April 12th and 13th Under the milk forest by Dylan Thomas as a live radio play version in the Werkraum of the Kammerspiele.

But that wasn’t enough of the great names. On the last weekend in April, the Residenztheater and Kammerspiele are upping the ante again. This is how Falk Richter stages the new play by Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek in the Kammerspiele. ash, that’s the name of the premiere on April 26th in the Schauspielhaus, announced as a “very personal text about saying goodbye to the earth”. And the Residenztheater has also entrusted its new in-house director Alexander Eisenach with a premiere. Mosi – The Bavarian Dream is the name of the evening, which revolves around the Munich fashion designer with cult character Rudolph Moshammer. The premiere is on April 27th in the Marstall.

And the popular theater? On the one hand, this relies on the Swiss author Friedrich Dürrenmatt and his world-famous play The visit of the old lady. However, director Sapir Heller moves the “tragic comedy” to the grandchildren’s generation. This time the old lady is not returning to her hometown of Güllen to take revenge for her once dishonorable expulsion. In Heller’s case, it is the granddaughter who unravels the story in Güllen that the residents would rather forget. Inherited trauma and collective guilt are the themes of the premiere on April 13th.

In April, the Volkstheater is also relying on a self-invented, popular and well-known name: on Radically young. Works by young directors can be seen at the theater festival for the 18th time, selected by a four-member jury. This year, 14 productions from Germany, Austria, Denmark, Greece and the Netherlands have been invited and can be seen from April 19th to 27th. Fans of this festival already know: there is also big cutlery here.
