With the change to the Danish throne there is also a new heir to the throne. Crown Prince Christian will have to deal with many queens in the future.

After his parents were king and queen of Denmark, Prince Christian (18) has a new role, which probably makes him a very desirable bachelor in Europe. Because the eldest son of Queen Mary (51), who was born in Australia, is the next in line to the Danish throne. His father, King Frederik X (55), followed his mother, Queen Margrethe II (83), to the throne on Sunday (January 14th). The long-serving queen surprisingly announced her abdication in her New Year’s speech.

The 18-year-old, who now holds the title of Crown Prince of Denmark, is believed to be the only single royal with this prestigious status in all of Europe. In the future there will be queens in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. Other male heirs to the throne such as Prince William (41) or the Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon (50) tied the knot years ago.

Rumors about Italian nobles – and a Cinderella moment

However, Christian made the first love headlines even before the new title. Most recently he was linked to Princess Maria Chiara di Borbone delle Due Sicilie (19). The Italian heiress is the daughter of Prince Carlo, Duke of Castro (60) – who claims the now defunct throne of the former house – and Princess Camilla, Duchess of Castro (52).

Rumors that the Duchess of Noto and Capri (Chiara) and the Crown Prince of Denmark (Christian) are close arose when the two were photographed together at the Monaco Grand Prix last year. Finally, Chiara dismissed the speculation on Instagram with the words: “We all like to dream about fairy tales, but what really counts is reality.” She also told the Italian newspaper “Corriere”: “We have known each other since we were children, my father Carlo is his younger sister’s godfather.” The latter refers to Princess Josephine (13).

The Danish royal family had not commented on the speculation, as reported by “Mail Online”, among others.

Another indication of Christian’s increasing popularity came from an event at his birthday party last fall. After the glamorous gala dinner at Christiansborg Palace – which was also attended by the future queens of Europe – there was a Cinderella moment. A visitor to the party, the Danish student Anne-Sofie Tornso Olesen (18), as it later turned out, left her golden shoe in the castle in the hope of being able to get to know Christian.

The palace published a photo of it on Instagram. “The owner is welcome to contact him [den Schuh, Red.] to get it back,” it said in the accompanying text. It is unclear whether Denmark’s new heir to the throne personally returned the shoe to her.

He appears confident and natural

Despite the attention he receives, Prince Christian prefers to keep his private life secret. Unlike the crown princes and crown princesses of previous generations, he does not seem to struggle with his fate. Confident, relaxed, open-minded and natural, he presented himself with his parents on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace on the day of the change of throne. When he greeted his father in parliament on Monday, he seemed a little more excited than the day before, but he was certainly able to cope with the situation.

The tall Dane had already made his first important solo appearance in public in the fall when he was celebrated on the castle balcony on the occasion of his aforementioned 18th birthday.

At the time, the palace said he would only carry out limited royal duties until his 21st birthday. A press release from the royal family read this: “Prince Christian’s main priority in the coming year will be completing upper secondary school.” At the time of this announcement, Christian was in his penultimate year of school at Ordrup Gymnasium, a public school in Copenhagen. It is unclear whether this will change with the change of throne.

In addition, Christian is just as athletic as his parents, which was seen, among other things, when he took part in the Royals Run in May 2023. The palace also shared a video of this and several photos.

In most of the other photos and videos, be it walking around a Christmas market or with the family Down Under, his mother’s homeland, Christian can be seen as – almost – a completely normal teenager, who likes to wear sporty hoodiesbut also cuts a fine figure in a jacketif it suits the occasion.
