Criticized by Mélenchon, Ciotti condemns the ultra-right gathering in Romans-sur-Isère

By clarifying his remarks, Éric Ciotti wanted to move away from the controversy between him and Jean-Luc Mélenchon on Monday. For this, the president of LR condemned on Monday the violent far-right rally on Saturday in Romans-sur-Isère, after having been severely criticized for not having reacted in the same terms on Sunday.

“Yes, I condemn”, affirmed the boss of the Republicans on C8, after the sentencing of six people to sentences of six to ten months in prison for having participated on Saturday evening in a violent ultra-right gathering in Romans-sur- Isère linked to the death of Thomas, stabbed at the end of a ball in the neighboring village of Crépol.

Ciotti satisfied with court sentences

“It is false to say that I did not condemn,” defended Éric Ciotti, who was notably attacked by Jean-Luc Mélenchon on X for not having condemned “the aggression” and maintaining an “ambiguity with racism (which) encourages the worst excesses of violence.”

“There is justice in our country. It has passed, of which act”, affirmed the boss of LR who justified his attitude on Sunday by assuring that he refused to “put on the same level” the death of Thomas and the far-right rally. “Not everything is equal in this country,” he said, denouncing, however, “idiots who demonstrated, who must be condemned and who were.”

Dozens of activists from the identity movement, hooded, from all over France, met on Saturday evening in Romans-sur-Isère “to do battle”, according to the authorities, with young people from the Monnaie district, from which some of the people involved in Thomas’ death.
