Criticism: “The Trojans” at the Cologne theater – culture

“The Trojan Women of Euripides” was the last production by the artistic director Karin Beier at the Schauspiel Köln, a good ten years ago. Beier played Jean-Paul Sartre’s adaptation of the classic drama text, which today one would call a rewriting: basically a separate play, written in 1965 in an almost satirically pointed language. Just Sartre. When the director Lucia Bihler takes on the same material and not only does without the Sartre text, but almost without any text at all, it becomes exciting because similar political positions to those of Karin Beier, namely feminist ones, have a completely different aesthetic bring forth. Ten years is an amazingly long time.
