It is one of the largest and most spectacular cash heists in Los Angeles history: up to $30 million was stolen. Now the FBI is investigating.

Thieves stole up to $30 million (almost €28 million) in cash from a cash storage facility in California. The spectacular break-in took place on Easter Sunday in a low-rise building in Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley, where cash from companies in the region is kept, as Elaine Morales of the Los Angeles police announced, according to the “Los Angeles Times”.

The burglars gained access to a safe in the building. It is said to be one of the largest cash heists in the history of Los Angeles trade.

The perpetrators got into the building through the roof of the money storage facility, the newspaper reported, citing investigators. The theft was only discovered on Monday. The federal agency FBI is investigating together with the police in Los Angeles. No further details were disclosed.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the largest cash heist to date in the Southern California metropolis occurred in 1997, when almost $19 million was stolen from a cash vault. The perpetrators were caught then.
