A theft in a supermarket – actually sounds unspectacular. But the victim is the former German head of government.

Ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) was robbed while shopping in Berlin. According to information from the German Press Agency, Merkel was on Thursday morning at around 11.40 a.m. in a delicatessen supermarket on Morsestrasse in Charlottenburg.

Her purse was stolen while she was shopping. The police only officially confirmed a theft that a 67-year-old woman reported to the police station on Friedrichstrasse in Berlin-Mitte. The stolen wallet contained an ID card, EC card, driver’s license and cash. The office of the former chancellor declined to comment.

Merkel was accompanied in the supermarket by at least one bodyguard from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). The police are investigating simple theft. The “Bild” newspaper reported that the wallet was in a bag that was hanging on the shopping cart.

Even during her years as chancellor, Merkel was known for going shopping herself. She was often seen in a supermarket near the government district or in the grocery department of a French department store on Friedrichstrasse.
